# Toyon Care Guide Toyon (California Holly or Christmas Berry) is a native California evergreen shrub with white summer flowers and spectacular red berries in fall and winter. It is a critical food source for birds and extremely drought tolerant. ## Planting Plant in fall in full sun with excellent drainage. Tolerates rocky and sandy soils. Space 8–12 feet apart. ## Watering Water deeply every 2–3 weeks for the first summer. Once established, do not water in summer. ## Pruning Minimal pruning needed. Prune lightly after fruiting to shape. Avoid heavy pruning. ## Wildlife Berries attract cedar waxwings, robins, and many other bird species.
