Spring-Flowering Bulbs to Plant in Late October and November
In late October and November (earlier in cold zones once soil cools, later in mild zones while ground is still open), spring-flowering bulbs still root if you can dig. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocus, and ornamental alliums planted in cool soil establish before winter and bloom when days lengthen.
If September got away from you, this window is the practical catch-up. Soil should be workable and cool; bulbs need weeks of root growth before a deep freeze locks the bed.
What still makes sense late in the window
Daffodils (Narcissus): Forgiving, deer-resistant in many yards, and reliable after late planting if depths are honest.
Tulips: Best as annual color in warm zones or where vole pressure is high; plant deep and in well-drained beds.
Hyacinths: Strong scent and early color; good in clusters near paths.
Crocus and early minor bulbs: Fast to plant in sweeps at the front of borders or in lawn edges where mowing starts late.
Ornamental alliums: Later spring globes; plant firm bulbs in sunny, drained soil.
Skip soft, moldy, or hollow bulbs. Large firm bulbs outperform bargain bags of lightweight rejects.

Depth, spacing, and soil
Plant about 2.5 to 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall, pointy end up. Tulips often sit 6-8 inches deep in open ground; smaller crocus sit shallower. Space so bulbs do not touch; tight clusters still need a little soil between them.
Drainage matters more than rich soil. In heavy clay, plant in raised beds or add grit. A light dressing of bulb fertilizer or bone meal in the hole or as a side dress is optional when soil tests are poor; do not pile fertilizer on the basal plate.
A bulb planter or auger speeds large drifts. For long beds, dig a trench, set bulbs, and backfill in one pass.

Zone timing for late October and November
- Zones 3-5: Prefer October; finish as soon as soil allows in early November before hard freeze.
- Zones 6-7: Late October through November is a strong window.
- Zones 8-9: November into early December for chill-honest types (narcissus, alliums); pre-chill tulips when winters are mild.
- Zones 10-11: Focus on narcissus and alliums; see spring bulbs in Zone 10 and Zone 9 spring bulbs.
Mulch after the soil cools to buffer freeze-thaw heave. Water once after planting if the bed is dry; winter precipitation usually finishes the job.
Checklist
- Soil cool and workable; discard soft bulbs.
- Depth about 3x bulb height; pointy end up.
- Drained site or raised bed in clay.
- Optional bone meal or bulb fertilizer per label.
- Mulch after cool-down; mark the bed so spring digging does not slice shoots.
Bottom line
Plant spring-flowering bulbs in late October and November while soil is open: daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocus, and alliums at proper depth with drainage. Late is fine when roots still have time before a deep freeze.
